The best way to reach Amrutheshwara Temple from Bangalore is through Hiriyur and Hosadurga. If you are traveling from Chikkamagaluru or Shivamogga, you can reach the place via Tarikere. Amrutesvara Temple is 260 km from Bangalore, 48 km from Shivamogga, and 65 km from Chikkamagaluru.



The Amrutheshwara Temple was built by Amrutheshwara Dandanayaka in 1196 during the reign of Hoysala King Veera Ballala II. This temple is a classic example of ancient Hoysala architecture. The small towers decorating the exterior walls of the temple are one of the unique features of this temple. This temple is in ekakuta style with only one vimana, unlike other tribute temples built by the Hoysalas at Somnathpur and Belur.
 
The Tower of the temple is decorated with idols of kirthimukhas and small decorations. Mallitamma, one of the greatest architects of the Hoysala dynasty, started his career as a sculptor at the Amrutheshwara Temple is here, giving this temple its historical importance. The exterior wall of the temple has panel paintings and scenes from Hindu epics and legends. A series of lathe-turned shining pillars supporting the roof of the mantapa show Hoysala-Chalukya's decorative characteristics.
 
The temple's main deity is Lord Shiva and the Shiva linga inside the temple is a 300-year-old Trimurti from the Kandikevale River in Nepal. On the auspicious days of Sankranthi and Mahashivaratri, thousands of devotees visit this place to seek Lord Shiva's blessings.
